Sue's story

ME after the Lightning Process

My story started like many others who have experienced M.E. It started at a time I was at full strech, juggling work, children, a new marriage, house and garden, and was completely stressed. Along came a flu virus and, being me, I battled on regardless. My energy and health ground to a halt, and several months later I got the diagnosis of ME. During the next 20 years there were long periods of being completely bed-bound, years of being house-bound, and many years of limping along managing short periods of part-time work and then relapsing.
But I am a naturally positive and cheerful person and though I did have short periods of depression and was sometimes very lonely, I remained stubbornly hopeful throughout. In fact an M.E. doctor once told me my main problem was that I couldn't accept that this was how it was going to be and nothing could change it! I tried all sorts of expensive therapies, but nothing seemed to help except the low dose Amitriptyline prescribed by the doctor. This at least helped me sleep, and lessened the pain.
I heard about the Lightning Process a number of years ago, but by then I was jaded by "instant cures", and dismissed it - I was coping with life in my own way. It wasn't until a friend's son did an LP course and went from very ill, to remarkably well in a very short time, that I realised this needed investigation. I was intrigued with what I found, and although some of the terminology made me cringe, I could see how the principles of LP related to new neurological research; this research was influencing the way I saw the interaction between my mind and my body. My family were very supportive of me doing a course of L.P., so I contacted Clare and was accepted to do the training.
That was 5 months ago - five very long, exciting months! The course itself was brilliant. I was with a great group of people, all of whom worked really hard. Clare's teaching was a model of excellent coaching, so despite the first day being exhausting, I knew by that evening that this was going to work for me. It was concrete, practical and inspirational.
It only took a few days for my life to turn around, and it has hasn't looked back since. Instead of being a sick 57 year old, I have reverted to my bouncy, energetic self of 20 years ago. I am now feeling and acting like that 37 year old again. Physically life has changed enormously. My weekly timetable now includes pilates classes, aqua aerobics, 40 length swimming sessions, a daily walk of up to 5 miles, gardening and sometimes even trampolining! I have travelled and climbed (small) mountains, and this summer lots of the extended family have come to stay.
Socially life is very different - I now go out in the evenings - something I hadn't done much of in 20 years. Best of all, I feel I that I can be there for, and enjoy time with, my husband, my elderly parents, my children and most of all my 2 year old granddaughter. I have also gone back to work a few hours a week, although that does not seem so important as the all the other aspects of my life. There's a lot of catching up to do and I intend to live to a ripe old age. Ahead lie many adventures!

It may be interesting to note the physiological changes - the science bit if you like. My resting heart rate for those 20 years of M.E. was always around the 85 beats per minute; now is 65, and my blood pressure 105/55. The psoriasis which I developed 6 years ago has disappeared completely, as has a bowel complaint which I had had also for20 years, and I easily came off the Amitriptyline, which I had taken for 15 years.
Needless to say I FEEL brilliant about my life now. I AM living the life I love. It's not an illusion, it's not wishful thinking - it's real and it's the future. This is one very happy Grannie!!
